One of the most common concerns encountered during the summer is ear pain. An ear infection occurs when a pathogenic microorganism affects the ear and causes inflammation. Often ear pain subsides without having the need to consult a doctor, simply by treating it with an OTC anti-inflammatory product, as suggested by your pharmacist. There are also cases, which require antibiotic treatment, suggested by your doctor, as the ear may be infected by bacteria. Children are the most affected by ear infections. An ear infection should be treated with caution as it can cause major health problems, leading to hearing loss.

What are the symptoms of an ear infection?

- Pain in one ear.

- Feeling occlusion of the ears.

- Muted hearing of sounds.

- Fever.

- Diarrhea.

What are the causes of an ear infection?

A change of the temperatures can cause colds, pain, an annoying buzzing in the ear, wheezing, and even temporary hearing loss. Swimming in contaminated water is enough to cause otitis externa. Environments with many children such as nurseries and kindergartens are more prone to the spread of pathogens, which are the cause of ear infections in young children. There are cases when ear infections are accompanied by cough, sneezing and stuffy nose. In older children, symptoms of ear infection include pain, hearing problems, a feeling of blockage or pressure in the ear, ear secretions, dizziness, loss of balance, and vomiting. In cases where the ear infection is not accompanied by pain, or fever it may also indicate the presence of fluid in the ear.

For the treatment of ear pain go to health care professional to get the right treatment.
